Why iTEP Works for Intensive English Programs
Last week, iTEP exhibited at the EnglishUSA Professional Development Conference in San Francisco. This is the leading conference for Intensive English Programs, or IEPs, and we greatly enjoyed meeting with our IEP partners, and discussing the English assessment challenges of IEPs.
When one thinks of an English proficiency test, one typically thinks of admissions. Students sign up to take iTEP at test centers which send their scores on to colleges, universities or secondary schools. However, a scenario that is just as common or more so, is students taking iTEP at IEPs or at home prior to arrival, for placement purposes. In fact, we give a great deal of thought to IEPs, and have applied no small amount of effort to ensuring that our tests meet their needs.
There has been a great demand among IEPs for an English proficiency test that provides quick results turnaround and is comprehensive. Previously, there was a trade off here. Tests could be scored quickly, but did not assess crucial skill sets. Tests that were comprehensive had long delays before scores were reported. iTEP is the only test that provides both efficiency and a complete assessment.
iTEP Academic tests grammar, listening, reading, speaking, and writing, and is scored within 5 business days (often fewer). For an additional $10 per test, IEPs can request expedited grading in 1 business day. Or, IEPs can internally grade the speaking and writing sections of the test themselves with iTEP guidelines (the other sections are scored automatically and instantly by computer). When IEPs grade iTEP internally, we discount the exams by 35%.
IEPs also sometimes need to get a rough idea of students’ skills before they arrive. We recently created a new test, iTEP Pre-Arrival, which can be taken non-securely for this purpose. Students can take the test at home to generate a preliminary score, and then take a comprehensive exam upon their arrival at the IEP.
Information gathered over the years at conferences like the EnglishUSA PDC, has helped us form our tests, which we hope truly meet the needs of IEPs.
