iTEP Au Pair FAQ
No other English test is designed specifically to evaluate au pairs. While many tests, such as our iTEP Academic and iTEP Business exams assess English skills needed in school or the workplace, iTEP Au Pair is the only test designed for Au-Pairs. iTEP Au Pair is also the only test that is affordable and convenient enough to be adopted as an integral part of the au pair screening process.
iTEP Au Pair assesses the skills most commonly used in a home or childcare setting: speaking and listening. Test-takers are required to produce actual speaking samples which are scored by native-English-speaking English as a Second Language professionals. These samples can be accessed by administrators evaluating test-takers. Learn more about the test format and scoring.
The Official iTEP Score Report shows the test-taker’s overall level (from 0-Beginner to 6-Mastery), as well as the breakdown of their scores on each section (listening and speaking). The listening section also includes subskills that provide further detail on the test tester’s specific strengths. Results are presented in both tabular and graphical formats.
iTEP Au Pair levels range from 0 (beginner) to 6 (mastery) and are expressed in .1 increments (e.g. 2.1, 2.1, 2.3, etc.). To get a rough idea of how well an individual can use English to communicate in the “real world” at each of iTEP Au Pair’s six levels (and how they compare to CEFR levels), please refer to the iTEP Academic Ability Guide. While this test contains additional sections that iTEP Au Pair does not, and includes different content within the questions, the logic for determining levels is the same.
Our clients typically administer iTEP Au Pair on their own office computers. iTEP staff is available to troubleshoot and guide you through the process. iTEP Au Pair can also be administered at a Certified iTEP Test Center, or on home computers if test security is not a concern. See the iTEP Au Pair test security page for more information about test security.

At this time, iTEP Au Pair does not have a paper test version available. We feel the speaking section is essential in providing an accurate assessment of a potential au pair, and the most feasible way to score this section of the test is over the Internet.
